CieloMar

CieloMar

Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste

12 people ∙ 6 bedrooms ∙ 8 bathrooms

Complemented by airy (and air-conditioned) interiors, oceanside Cielomar flaunts an extravagant ‘bow and arrow’ design – with the semi-circular house mimicking a bow, and its entry bridge forming the arrow. As well as providing perfect privacy, that curving shape enables many adjacent areas – a salon containing a dining table and a bar; the kitchen; a covered outdoor lounge; the sun deck and its 27-metre, black-stone pool – to face straight out to sea. So, too, do all six ensuite bedrooms, each of them bright and timber-accented. Only the master suite, however, boasts a completely private Zen garden and outdoor shower – an exotic retreat in which to bathe and relax. Other indoor spaces offering breaks from the equatorial sun are a beanbag-lined cinema room and your very own gym. The villa's staff includes a butler, cook, waiter, concierge, property manager, and housekeeping. The cook and property manager are a live-in couple. CieloMar guests have access to the nearby Four Seasons resort's spectacular Arnold Palmer-designed golf course, tennis courts, restaurants, and spa. As well as complimentary access to The Prieta Beach Club - which is located about five minutes away on provided golf carts. The Prieta Beach Club includes three pools, three restaurants, a spa, an activity centre, and dozens of beach chairs. Otherwise, Peninsula Papagayo’s activities centre on the ocean: swimming off numerous sandy shores, snorkelling, sport-fishing and, from July to November, humpback whale-watching. Canopy zip-lines are located within a 45-minute drive, and the monkey-filled Guanacaste National Park is about twice that.

Casa Alang Alang

Casa Alang Alang

Tamarindo, Guanacaste

20 people ∙ 8 bedrooms ∙ 8 bathrooms

Ideal for groups of friends seeking a luxurious base, Casa Alang Alang typifies Steve Adams’s award-winning work. The late Californian architect is renowned for homes whose indoor and outdoor boundaries are blurred. Cascading downhill, with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and sandy Playa Grande, this stone-built villa decidedly fits that description. The glass sides of its living area, for instance, can be fully retracted or closed off. An ironwood dining table and comfortable sofa await, as do a nearby gym and ping-pong table. If al fresco days are in order – and they usually are – palm trees ring various decks, a thatched gazebo and two infinity pools (one integrating a hot tub) ensuring that everyone has space. The main terrace is fantastic for meals or cocktails over a tropical sunset. Everywhere inside is ultra-spacious, including the bright bedrooms. These are ensuite and mostly afford outside access; one features an additional kitchenette. Alongside two housekeepers, a concierge can take care of grocery shopping, buffet breakfast preparation – starring that famous Costa Rican coffee – and any other meals you want to be provided (food costs extra). An all-natural anti-mosquito system has been installed, as has an eco-friendly system providing still and sparkling water on tap. Tamarindo’s attractive centre is just a five-minute stroll. Playa Grande itself is great for surfing or seeing nesting leatherback turtles (October to February). For beautiful white-sand beaches, visit the close-by resort area of Playa Langosta.

Sunset House

Sunset House

Tamarindo, Guanacaste

14 people ∙ 5 bedrooms ∙ 5 bathrooms

Elevated just above Tamarindo’s toffee-coloured beach, and staring straight out to sea, Sunset House’s position aptly justifies its name. From this oh-so-tropical property, designed by award-winning US architect Steve Adams, you can watch as the Pacific Ocean turns a stupendous pink after each blissful day. And you can watch this spectacle from numerous perches. From the four main bedrooms (the fifth is a cool bunk room for four kids) – each ensuite with a white-walled, Hamptons vibe. From the master suite’s exotic outdoor shower. From the infinity pool, or the sun loungers around it. From the various decks, or a thatched pavilion. Or from the open-plan, indoor/outdoor ‘great room’, whose living and dining areas neighbour a superb kitchen. It all adds up a sprawling, flexible base for families or congregations of friends. A full-time housekeeper ensures the villa is kept clean and, if desired, a local chef can come to provide delicious meals, and do your shopping, for an additional cost. That might be while you’re down on Tamarindo’s lovely shore or visiting surrounding seasides. Just to the north, Playa Grande is great for surfing or seeing nesting leatherback turtles from October to February, while the southerly resort area of Playa Langosta delivers especially beautiful white-sand beaches.

BEST TIME TO GO

Please note: these are the average temperatures reported but can vary greatly due to weather conditions, such as heat waves etc. We kindly invite you to contact us for more information, including confirmation that your chosen villa has air conditioning, to ensure a comfortable stay.

HOW TO GET THERE

Make the journey as memorable as the arrival. Your dedicated concierge can arrange transportation from the closest airport to your Costa Rica villa.

  • By plane Most of our Costa Rican villas are located 1-3 hours from the airport, offering a scenic drive through lush landscapes. For those seeking shorter transfers, a select few villas are just 30 to 45 minutes away.

Our Concierge team can recommend the best airport based on your villa’s location and arrange private drivers, vehicle delivery, or charter flights to nearby regional airports. Juan Santamaria Airport serves the capital, San José, while Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport is closest for villas along the Pacific Northwest coast. We’re here to ensure a smooth, relaxing journey from arrival to villa.
  • By car Costa Rica’s road system is good, allowing you to easily explore the country by car. The legendary Pan-American Highway runs through the country from the northern border with Nicaragua to the Panama border in the south. If you’re planning to visit the jungles of the north or head off the beaten track, ask your concierge to book a vehicle with 4x4 capabilities.

LOCAL TIPS

  • It’s good to remember that restaurants, cafes and soda shops (small local restaurants) always add 10% service charge and 13% tax on every bill.
  • Many of the roads in Costa Rica are dirt tracks with plenty of potholes, so it's worth renting a 4x4 if you plan on driving.
  • Although the Costa Rican Colones is the official currency of Costa Rica, almost everywhere will accept US Dollars; just be sure to check the exchange rate.
